Planning Application No 10/02378/FUL

Dear Member

There cannot be a member who does not know of our plans for the golf club. It has taken five years to get to this stage and if this fails our chance will have gone forever. If you value your membership and want the club to continue for many years to come, for your benefit and that of future generations, it is very important that you and your family and friends make your views known.

This could well make a significant difference to the outcome, as all views properly made will be taken into account by the Councillors when making a decision. Your views really do matter!  It would be helpful if you could make your comments by 19 August but comments after this are still important.

There are several ways to do this; perhaps the easiest and most effective is simply to write or email the Development Manager at the Council offices. The email address is developmentmanagementnorth@wiltshire.gov.uk postal address is Wiltshire Council, Planning Services, Monkton Park, Chippenham, SN15 1ER. All correspondence should bear the reference number 10/02378/FUL and refer to the site as Development at Chippenham Golf Club, or similar wording. A further route is to go to the Wiltshire Council website, click on North Wiltshire link for applications and use the above reference number. These methods are more effective than merely to sign a petition and an individual letter or email composed by the writer means more to the officer and Councillors.  Anonymous comments are discarded.

However, we have also set up an on-line petition and are asking you to persuade your family, friends and neighbours to add their names to this.  The address is:-

http://www.chippenhamgolfclub.co.uk/petition.asp   They will be asked to add their details and the following sequence of letters and numbers 5s0rt4bL4 (the third is the number zero).  It sounds complicated but it really is not.

You can view the application in several ways; as well as the plans being displayed in the clubhouse, at the above Council offices; on the Council website (click on the North Wiltshire link for applications deposited at Chippenham and enter the reference number).

There is no need for a lengthy letter.  Three or four sentences would be ideal; if you support the proposal you could begin by saying:

I am strongly in favour of this application for the following reasons...”  You could pick and choose from the following points, using your own wording where appropriate or make up your own reasons.

1)       Providing improved modern facilities of the highest standard for our ageing population is necessary and desirable for Chippenham and the county.

2)       The better facilities at the golf club are part of a continuing programme of improvement and would provide a boost to the health and wellbeing of the area

3)       The proposal will provide much needed long term employment

4)       The design of the proposed development is of high quality and would enhance the visual approach to Chippenham

5)       The golf club has no alternative means of providing such high cost facilities

6)       The golf club’s future is secured for generations

7)       The golf club is setting a high standard in the provision of facilities for local youth and the proposal will further enhance their effectiveness

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT; DO PLEASE MAKE YOUR VIEWS KNOWN.

Development update

Friday 9th July 2010

The last four years has been a long road and after a large commitment of time and effort from the development team consisting of Roger Martin, Paul Barrett and myself, I am pleased to announce that yesterday Thursday 8th July the planning application was submitted for our development.

We are now in the hands of the planners, but the development team will continue to lobby councillors to obtain their support for the total development.

A petition will be drawn up and displayed in the entrance hall on the notice board; this is to support our case and would ask all members including your friend’s relations etc to sign this at your earliest convenience.

Four years ago the Executive Committee and the Development Team presented ‘The Vision’ to the members and we are now very close to making that reality.

My team and I would like to thank you all for your support over this long period and let us all look forward to the exciting times ahead.

Graham

The club has recently acquired adjacent land on which six new holes are being developed. When completed, these new holes will increase the size of the course by nearly 50% and add some challenging water hazards and fairways with spectacular views. As can be seen the new holes will be integrated into the existing layout, and whilst the resulting white tees total length will significantly increase from the current yardage, shorter yellow tees will be created to permit society and members to enjoy a satisfying round. In accordance with the new course objectives the two starting points are both close to the new clubhouse location, and all the greens constructed to USGA standards. The golf objective is to create a course with a balanced Par and SSS possibly 70 /70 or 71/71.

To date Holes 12 and 16 have been created and are being used for special events. Brief details of these and other new holes are as follows:

  • Hole 9 – Par 4/5. A dog-leg hole which rewards a long straight drive which then reveals the previously hidden green. A tricky final shot has to be threaded through trees to an existing well bunkered green.
  • Hole 12 - Par 4. Already built. A wide fairway gently ascending to the horizon belays the problem of often driving into the prevailing wind. Superb views downhill to the south and west, and north towards Kington St. Michael, are a feature of this area, which is the highest point on the course.
  • Hole 13 - Par 3. A drop hole with the left hand wood ready to welcome a hooked shot.
  • Hole 14 - Par 5. A demanding hole involving risk and reward decisions from tee to green. The lake is ready to collect a wayward drive, with water having to be carried for the second shot. Water should also be avoided for the final shot with club selection paramount!
  • Hole 15 – Par 4. A dog leg hole. A straight drive short of the pond allows an uphill shot into a green cut into the hillside. Attempting to cut the corner is not advised.
  • Hole 16 – Par 4. Already built. A blind drive favouring the left side of the fairway, allows a deceptive distance approach shot to an angled green. An ‘Out of Bounds' follows the left side for the entire fairway. Clumps of trees either side of the fairway and bunkers await the indifferent shot.
